Wipeout Dementia 2023

Wipeout Dementia is a corporate surfing fundraiser, hosted by the Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing (CHeBA), UNSW to raise funds for dementia research. All funds raised go directly to The Dementia Momentum®, a CHeBA initiative which seeks to bring researchers and the community together to change the future of dementia incidence.

Why support the Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing (CHeBA)?

CHeBA hopes to meet a major need in the health research environment in Australia. Our population is ageing, and with it comes the challenges of increasing dependence, reduced workforce participation and increasing burden of disease. The greatest burden on this population, and thereby on society, is imposed by brain diseases, in particular dementia. Not only is dementia a huge economic burden, its human costs on the individual and the family are also incalculable.

In 2023, it is estimated there are more than 400,000 Australians living with dementia. Without a medical breakthrough, the number of people with dementia is expected to increase to more than 800,000 by 2058.

The challenge is indeed great. If we are to improve the health of older Australians and postpone or prevent dementia, CHeBA's research is critical. The research being conducted at CHeBA spans the spectrum from molecules and genomic science right through to enhancing cognition and developing health policy. The emphasis is not only on new discovery but on translating new findings into real health outcomes for the community. As laboratory scientists rub shoulders with clinicians, health care workers and policy makers, we hope that the excitement of bench research will be felt at the bedside and in the boardroom.
