Dr Karen Mather has been awarded the Dean's Rising Star Award for “significant contributions to research” at the UNSW Medicine Dean’s Awards on 18 November 2015.

Dr Mather is the leader of the Genetics & Genomics group at the Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing (CHeBA) and her Rising Star award follows a highly successful period in which she has received funding from the NHMRC, Yulgilbar Foundation and Sachdev Foundation. Dr Mather was also awarded funding from the Mason Foundation for research using an integrated ‘omics’ approach to better understand the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

“I am fascinated by ageing, as I see it as one of the last frontiers of medical science,” said Dr Mather. “Genetics has already provided insights into a range of other health issues and it is exciting to see how it can improve our understanding of dementia.”

Dr Mather’s recent research includes investigating the biological determinants of memory loss, an early symptom of Alzheimer’s disease, as well as being heavily involved in the genetics components of CHeBA’s international consortia, which aim to increase our understanding of healthy and pathological ageing. Dr Mather is a member of the CHARGE and ENIGMA consortia, which recently identified genes associated with how people process information and for brain structures.

CHeBA Co-Directors Professors Henry Brodaty and Perminder Sachdev congratulated Dr Mather on her extraordinary efforts and said they look forward to seeing Dr Mather’s research career continue to flourish. They also extended their appreciation to UNSW Medicine for its Rising Star program, which is an important component of the Faculty’s talent management program.
