Update on Cognitive Reserve
The presentation will be followed by a live Q&A session with Professor Stern
Professor Stern will give a brief history of the concepts underlying reserve, including brain reserve, cognitive reserve and brain maintenance. The research approaches to understanding the neural basis of these concepts will be discussed. He will describe the progress of a program designed to come to consensus on operational definitions for terms related to reserve and resilience among human and animal researchers. Professor Stern will also share some new data exploring the neural implementation of cognitive reserve.

Dr Stern is the Florence Irving Professor of Neuropsychology in the Departments of Neurology and Psychiatry and the Taub Institute for the Research on Alzheimer’s Disease and the Aging Brain and the Gertrude H. Sergievsky Center, at Columbia University. He is chief of the Cognitive Neuroscience Division of the Department of Neurology.
His research focuses on cognition in normal ageing and in diseases of ageing, particularly Alzheimer’s disease. Dr Stern’s work was crucial to identifying and clarifying the nature of cognitive reserve, a theory explaining individual differences in the susceptibility to age-and disease-related brain changes.
Dr Stern also leads a large-scale imaging study to identify unique neural networks underlying the major cognitive abilities affected by ageing, and a long-term study that models the natural history of Alzheimer’s disease. He has published over 600 peer-reviewed papers, numerous chapters, and edited a book on cognitive reserve.
