2020 has been a difficult and unpredictable year, challenging each and every one of us.
Although we are currently living in a very complex time with a worldwide pandemic, we must not forget that dementia remains one of our biggest public health challenges.
Dementia takes no heed of the pandemic. The number of people diagnosed with dementia worldwide continued to increase rapidly throughout 2020.
Here in Australia, 1 in 10 people over the age of 65 is affected by dementia.
There is no cure. The answer lies in critical research, for which we need your support.
We now know that the disease process develops slowly over 20-30 years before symptoms become apparent, offering a window of opportunity for its prevention or delaying of the symptoms. For this to happen, we need to develop tests to identify those at risk very early in the course of the disease.
There are several risk factors that can be modified if the disease is diagnosed early. Reducing each modifiable risk factor of dementia by a modest 10% would result in a significant impact on worldwide prevalence, reducing it by more than 8% by 2050. A 25% reduction in modifiable risk factors would result in an incredible 3 million fewer cases.
At CHeBA, we are striving for this outcome. But we need your help.
Your support of the CHeBA 1 in 10 Appeal today will have a direct impact on this critical research and help pave the way towards a healthier future for generations to come.
