"I lost my beautiful grandmother to Dementia, and whilst I had heard of this condition this was the first time I had experienced it first hand. To watch a loved one lose their cognitive function, and then all function, is heartbreaking. Seeing my once strong, exceptionally opinionated, articulate Nana reduced to the personality and function of a young girl, was difficult. The worst part was during the early phase where she was aware that she was moving between the two worlds of clarity and lucidity. Health, fitness and wellness is what I live and breathe, and when I saw an opportunity to be involved with CHeBA I jumped at it. To offer my expertise and experience to a cause that I believe is changing attitudes and awareness around these issues is a perfect match. The message of what we do in our younger years has a direct impact on the quality of our latter years is one that needs be heard."
What does "Healthy Brains. Positive Ageing" mean to me?
In historical times and amongst various tribes around the world our elderly were revered. They were the ones who held the most wisdom and were respected. Ageing was a positive experience. Today, unfortunately, 'ageing' is looked upon less favourably. It seems that 'being old' is associated with health issues and decline, however it does not need to be that way. Everyone has the potential to age positively, and by that I mean being in the optimal physical and psychological condition they can be. Anyone who surrounds themselves with 'quality' (ie. quality relationships, quality nutition, quality exercise, quality sleep/rest and quality mindset) will live a quality life - regardless of age. By taking a holistic approach to health, wellness and life, people can and should have a positive experience with ageing.
