"With my mother being an aged care assessment nurse for the past 20 years (her specialty being in dealing with Alzheimer's and dementia in patients), I have been privileged enough to have heard about the patients my mother has been responsible for evaluating. From listening to the experiences her patients face, and assessing the impact their brain ailments have, not only on their lives but also the lives of their loved ones, I have gained a newfound appreciation and understanding of the importance of preventing such brain diseases by adopting a healthy lifestyle.
For the last few years, I have been dedicated to not only eating a healthy diet but also ensuring I make exercise a part of my daily life. Consequently, as soon as I heard of the research CHeBA was undertaking I was instantly interested in becoming a Fitness Ambassador in order to promote CHeBA's insights and raise awareness about the importance of research into the ageing brain."
What does "Healthy Brains. Positive Ageing" mean to me?
I believe "Healthy Brains, Positive Ageing" is a motto that all people, young and old, should live by. It is common knowledge that in order for us to age in a healthy way in which you stay not only fit and strong but also maintain mental functioning through your older years, it is important to start taking care of both your mind and body when you are younger, by adopting a reasonably healthy lifestyle. Many Gen X and Y people today may not think that prioritising appropriate nutrition and fitness is very important given their busy lives, however positive ageing can only come about by making positive choices with regards to our health and such choices need to start while we are young. Unfortunately, many people do not realise the importance of such positive lifestyle choices until it is too late.
