In April 2016, a donation of $25,000 was made by Roger Layton to The Dementia Momentum®. This contribution is in honour of Dr Merrilyn Layton, wife of UNSW Emeritus Professor of Marketing Roger Layton AM. Merrilyn worked with Roger in many projects including the development of higher education in Guangzhou (pictured) and was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2002. She participated with Roger in DCRC committees and projects.

A committed member of CHeBA’s Advisory Committee since the Centre’s launch in 2012, Professor Layton is conversant with CHeBA’s track record in dementia research and was keen to showcase his support for The Dementia Momentum® initiative.

“CHeBA’s research is critical to improving the future of dementia incidence in Australia and reducing future suffering of families like ours,” said Professor Layton.

“Our donation is targeting infrastructural and administrative support which is essential for facilitating research, but is often overlooked and underestimated.”

CHeBA Co-Director Professor Perminder Sachdev said that guidelines for many philanthropic and government bodies limit funding to research only.

“Contributions like Professor Layton’s are crucial for establishing and ensuring the smooth operations of large-scale research programs like the international consortia contributing to The Dementia Momentum,” said Professor Sachdev.

In addition to Silver Member support of The Dementia Momentum®, Professor Layton has a strong history of pro bono support of UNSW Australia.
